“Another world is necessary, another world is possible,” Vanessa Nakate told protesters in Glasgow, which is currently hosting the United Nations climate summit, COP26.

That positive message was the theme of the speech by the 24-year-old Ugandan, a prominent activist who called out a lack of inclusion in the climate movement after an AP photo cropped her out of an image with four young, white activists.

She said that Africa and the global south were facing some of the worst consequences of climate change, but from that disaster could emerge a more just world.

“We won’t have to fight for limited resources because there will be enough for everyone,” Nakate said of her imagined future. “There is food to eat and water to drink. Children can go to school without fear of dropping out.”

Nakate urged protesters to keep holding their leaders accountable in order to make this world a reality.
