Selena Gomez led the ‘SNL’ studio audience in a wholesome ‘Barney’ singalong

If you watched Only Murders in the Building then you knew going in to expect a good time from Saturday Night Live with Selena Gomez hosting. And if you didn’t watch the hilarious Hulu whodunit, first, find a way to correct that, and second, this opening monologue gets things off to a great start.

Gomez comes out swinging with some wisecracks pointed directly at her Only Murders co-stars, Steve Martin and Martin Short — a demonstration right away of how she more than holds her own starring alongside the two comedy legends. She then delivers a quick Miley Cyrus impression before admitting that she’s single and appearing on SNL because she’s all about “manifesting love,” prompting several cast members — some of whom are married, she reminds them — to shoot their shot.

But the best moment of the monologue comes at the end. Gomez, for those who may not know, got her start in acting on the kids TV show Barney & Friends. She mentions it right at the start of the monologue, but then she returns to it as the monologue winds down, inviting the audience to join her in a singalong of the iconic Barney “I love you” song that definitely won’t get stuck in your head again the moment you hear it.
