Bad news, Wii owners: Nintendo has announced that it will soon be suspending all video streaming services on the system, and that includes Netflix.
Netflix reportedly sent out an email to its users signifying the end of streaming video service support on the console, noting the following, according to a Redditor:
“Unfortunately, Nintendo will suspend all video streaming services on Wii—including the Netflix Channel—after January 31, 2019.
We hope you’ll soon enjoy an even better Netflix experience with additional features on a supported device. Please visit netflix.com/wii for our device list.”
Little by little, Nintendo is winding down support for its then-revolutionary motion control-fueled console. The Wii Shop Channel is set to shut down at the start of the new year as well, which means there will no longer be a way to purchase Virtual Console titles nor WiiWare games there. The Virtual Console is still a feature the Nintendo Switch is bereft of, a year after its debut, though fans are still clamoring for its inclusion.
Notably, YouTube only just released its app on the Switch this week. The Switch isn’t faring too well regarding video streaming service support itself, as Netflix still hasn’t debuted on the handheld-console hybrid. So far, only Hulu and YouTube are now available for Switch owners looking to watch video on the go.
It’s a shock that this didn’t happen sooner though, given the console’s debut 12 years ago (2006). Amazingly, it’s still a household item that’s in regular use around the world. Unfortunately, this is one less feature the massively popular Nintendo console will be capable of now.
