New users pick Vue over React, report shows

Nine months after the last update on the State of JavaScript Frameworks, the npm team released a report that presents an overview of what went down during 2018 in the JavaScript universe, some updates on what has changed in these past nine months, and offers some predictions for the coming year.

In this article, however, I would like to focus on a very interesting aspect presented in this report, namely the state of JavaScript tooling.

The main highlight that I would like to emphasize is the fact that all of the survey respondents would like to see less tooling and less configuration required in order to get started. Instead, they’d like to see better documentation of the existing tools.

Digging a bit deeper into the JavaScript tooling universe, we see React’s continued domination of the scene with over 60% of the respondents using React.

However, it is worth mentioning that React’s growth appears to be slower in 2018 than it was in 2017, as it can be seen in the graph above.

On the other hand, we have Angular and its rather sluggish growth. The report shows that the two main flavors of Angular have stayed rather flat in terms of market share in 2018.

Which brings us to the next highlight of this report. Vue has been showing a steady growth rate even before 2018 and it continues to do so throughout this year. The report mentions that many Vue users picked it over React because, as they argued, Vue is easier to get started while maintaining extensibility. The npm team claims that React’s slower growth rate in 2018 can be explained by the fact that many newer users pick Vue over React.

Speaking of technologies that rise and fall behind, what are your predictions regarding the technologies that will last, fade or evolve further in the coming year? Is TensorFlow just a trend or a technology that is becoming the new norm in machine learning? How much further will serverless evolve?

Participate in our survey and let us know what technology will be the king of 2019 and which one will have its run cut short!
