Shout it from the mountaintops — or, at least, put it in a tweet to Disney.
A new theatrical production of Disney’s Hercules, based on the beloved but underrated 1997 animated hit and now playing onstage for one week only in NYC, should have Disney very, very excited.
As a theatrical event, it’s a joy. Directed by Lear deBessonet and presented as part of the Public Theater’s Public Works program (meaning over 200 community members are part of the production, in addition to the pros in larger roles) the show is bare-bones but thrilling, featuring a youthful and energetic Jelani Alladin as Hercules; Krysta Rodriguez (Smash) as the smart and sassy Meg; and Roger Bart, who was the singing voice of Hercules in the animated film, taking on the villainous Hades.
