There aren’t that many stories that still get people talking 80 years after they were released, but Daphne de Maurier’s Rebecca — which was first published in 1938 before being adapted for the screen by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940 — is definitely one of them.
It’s now poised to reach a whole new generation, too. On Tuesday, Netflix dropped the trailer for its upcoming adaptation, which stars Lily James as Mrs de Winter, the wife of a wealthy estate-owner (Maxim, played by Armie Hammer) who’s haunted by the death of his first wife.
The trailer is every bit as unsettling as you’d expect, following Mrs de Winter as she arrives at the infamous Manderley estate before growing increasingly uneasy about the house, the looming presence of housekeeper Mrs Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas), and the lingering memory of the eponymous Rebecca.
