Realtime Worlds’ open world Xbox 360 adventure Crackdown is currently free to download on the official Xbox Store, with enhanced Xbox One X support.
The game, which takes place in the fictional Pacific City, tasks players with taking down a variety of crime syndicates as they step into the role of “Agents.” There’s a wide variety of missions to complete that can be tackled in the order players choose, with melee attacks, superpowered traits that soup up characters’ physical abilities, and lots of orbs to collect to level up. It also features two-player co-op, with the ability to drop-in at any point for both players to work together and complete the same objectives.
The game also originally included access to the Halo 3 beta, which everyone and their brother wanted to get into and helped bolster Crackdown’s success significantly. It saw a sequel in 2010, and now Crackdown 3 is on the horizon for 2019 as an Xbox One and PC release in February.
With that said, it looks like Microsoft is finally shining the spotlight on the 2007 title ahead of its XO18 event taking place this weekend in Mexico, where Xbox head Phil Spencer will be sharing new on Minecraft and Xbox exclusives Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, Forza Horizon 4, and yes, Crackdown 3.
There are additional Xbox Game Pass announcements planned as well as a few “surprises” in store as well, but with this deal’s perfect timing it certainly seems as though it’s time for an update regarding Crackdown 3’s tumultuous progress. Several delays and radio silence have plagued public perception, but it looks like this time we could finally get some hard news about when to expect it.
In the meantime, it’s definitely worth reaching into the past and snagging this game for free, especially since it’s available as a backwards compatible title on Xbox One with Xbox One X enhancements. Grab a friend and go save the city.
