JAX London program

This year’s conference features 7 different tracks focusing on different aspects of Java and software innovation.

  • Software Architecture & Design: Learn how to handle today’s technology challenges and gain insight into the dos and don’ts, ups and downs of modern software architecture.
  • Java Core & JVM Languages: This track interprets Java to our ever new surrounding. Sync your skillset to the requirements of the future of Java programming.
  • Microservices: Grain down your monolith. As modularity takes big steps on the world, you should transform with microservices.
  • Cloud, Kubernetes, Serverless: “Our backend consists of hundreds of small services, each owned by one team that builds and operates it. Having highly distributed engineering enables us to both grow as a company and constantly scale our backend to an ever growing number of users.” – Niklas Gustavsson, Spotify
  • DevOps & Continuous Delivery: “Live and breathe Continuous Delivery – our team of 20 developers changes 30,000 lines of code every month, half of our codebase is less than 17 months old and new features are delivered to production fortnightly” – Stefanos Zachariadis, LMAX Exchange
  • Big Data & Machine Learning: Find out how to automate your data center with containers, why nobody at Google uses MapReduce anymore and what is Google Cloud Dataflow among other things. Discover why big data is no longer enough.
  • Agile & Culture: A sneak peek into the changes that have shaped the corporate culture and a helping hand with the process of becoming fully agile.

Cool sessions you should check out!

Java Serialization: A Modern Fairytale – Dr. Stephen Hellberg

Once, long ago, we looked upon serialization as an important part of Java. As the years passed, we began to recognize the flaws in its design and sighed. Today we realize that the story of serialization has become a dark and twisted tale.

In this session you’ll see why we still need serialization, how the inbuilt design is fatally flawed and how it is being exploited and used against us. Learn how to work against the dark arts railed against us and understand how even the alternative forms of Java serialization can still be open to attack.

Does this tale have a happy ending? Can goodness prevail and can you make your application safe from Java serialization weaknesses? Only you can decide.

Implementing Microservices on a Blockchain in Java – Peter Lawrey

In this talk, Peter Lawrey looks at the open source platform Chronicle Decentred and how it can be used to implement microservices in a Byzantine Fault Tolerant cluster of nodes. One of the key advantages of a public blockchain is that organisations can work together without needing to trust each other, rather they trust the protocol, something which cannot be achieved with a traditional database.

Serverless On Your Own Terms using Knative – Mark Chmarny

Knative is an open-source serverless platform extending Kubernetes to help developers build, deploy, and manage modern serverless workloads. Whether you write functions or applications Knative solves many of the common developer burdens like scaling, resource and route management, or logging and tracing without the need to worry about the underlying infrastructure. Knative also comes with a vibrant ecosystem of multi-cloud event sources which are easy to wire up in your application and trigger your code. And because Knative is open, you can run it on any Cloud or in your own data center where Kubernetes is offered. This session will provide overview of Knative project and introduce many of the common developer and operational patterns used to run real-world solutions.

In this session you will:

  • Learn what Knative is and what are its benefits
  • Overview major Knative components and their role
  • Use demos to illustrate common way to interact with Knative

We can’t wait to see you in London!
