GitHub Mobile is now generally available for Android & iOS

Across the world, teams are working from home in order to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. By now, we have all become familiar with tools such as Slack calls and Zoom video conferences in order to keep in touch and stay on top of work. To add to the list, GitHub Mobile could not have come at a better time.

After months of testing and help from beta users, the new update for GitHub Mobile officially brings the app out of beta mode. It introduces a fully-native experience on your phone and is available for both Android and iOS devices on the Google Play and App Store.

Out of beta

GitHub for Android went beta back in January 2020, a few months after debuting a conceptual sneak peek at GitHub Universe 2019.

Beta testers came through and with their help, have merged over 100 pull requests. According to the general availability announcement post by Ryan Nystrom, there have been “tens of thousands of team interactions”.

The pocket version contains many of the same functions as the full-fledged site, allowing you to collaborate on the small screen. Compared to viewing GitHub on your phone in just mobile view, it offers a smoother experience.

  • Pull requests: Review, merge, and mark pull requests.
  • Swipe away messages: Swipe notifications to finish a task or return to them at a later date.
  • Give feedback and comments
  • Organize all of your issues: Add labels, assignees, and groups and react, react, and reply to issues.
  • Dark mode compatible: What’s an app without dark mode? Save your eyes during those late-night commits.
  • Browse your code
  • New web notifications: Available both on desktop and mobile, the new web notifications help users quickly access their notifications and take immediate action. From now on, this is the default mode on GitHub. View the blog post for more info about this new feature.

This app is available for both individual users, teams, and Enterprise Cloud. So far, on Google Play, it has over 50,000 installs and an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars. On the App Store, it sits at the 33rd most popular app in the ‘Productivity’ category.

Check it out on Google Play and the App Store. The Android version requires Android 5.0 and up, while the iOS version requires iOS 12.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
