Cloud computing burst onto the scene more than a decade ago. In the years since then, the growth has been nothing short of stratospheric. Cloud services are now an integral part of the modern internet and tech infrastructure; it’s almost impossible to imagine life without it.
According to NetEnrich Inc., a Microsoft technology partner, that’s a common feeling. In their 2019 Cloud Adoption survey, NetEnrich found that nearly 70% of organizations are using cloud infrastructure today.
This survey wasn’t looking at lean, cutting-edge startups, either. With responses from over a hundred decision makers at companies with 500 or more employees, NetEnrich shows the mainstream adoption and growth of cloud computing and technologies.
Cloud computing’s future looks clear
First off, 68% of respondents said that they are currently using cloud infrastructure today. Considering that an additional 27% said that they were planning to adopt it in the future, which leaves only 5% of respondents without a future in the cloud. This kind of market domination is impressive, to say the least.
For those using the public cloud, roughly half (47%) are doing so extensively. Another 38% use the public cloud moderately and a respectable 15% have light usage. The most common cloud adoption models seem to be mostly a mix of IaaS and PaaS, with a bit of containerization. Only 18% of enterprises use just IaaS.
Surprisingly, DevOps shows it still has a long ways to go. Roughly a quarter of respondents (23%) stated they had completely switched to DevOps, whereas around 60% said they used some tools for continuous integration/continuous code. There are a pretty significant number of holdouts, with nearly a fifth (18%) responding that they still have not switched to DevOps.

Dark skies ahead?
2019’s top priorities are pretty unsurprising: security comes in first (72%), followed by software-defined networking (58%) and business analytics (51%). However, security also comes in first for a major concern in 2019 (33%), along with privacy (20%) and managing costs (15%). Not surprising, given the regular news of data breaches and the GDPR regulations regarding security issues. Managing security issues while still optimizing workloads and improving efficiency and productivity is going to be an ongoing issue for enterprise IT for the near future.
Managing costs isn’t a small issue either. Between the growth of shadow IT and the general price tag of a decent developer, enterprises are concerned with their budget sheets. Big concerns include the cost of labor (48%), worry about purchasing too much unnecessary tech (46%), and too much outsourcing (46%). This ties into some previous research we’ve looked at before, which found that cloud computing is an essential skill for developers to learn in 2019.
