Several years ago, 18-year-old Kian Tortorello-Allen was nervous about telling the camp he had attended since he was 11 that he was transgender and about the gender pronouns he was now using. “I really didn’t want anything to change in a community that I loved,” he says. Though his mother told administrators, Tortorello-Allen, wasn’t allowed to move from the girls’ bunk, where he had spent past summers, to the boys’ bunk. “Our bunks were separated and on different sides of the hill called ‘girls’ side’ and ‘boys’ side.’ I didn’t have a choice and had to stay on the girls’ side even though I would have far preferred to stay on the boys’ side,” he says.
