In a stunning feat, astronomers managed to snap a photo of the black hole at the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way.
The feat was impressive: Even light can’t escape a black hole, making the objects invisible. Yet scientists managed to image the superhot debris surrounding its shadowy center using eight radio dishes from around the globe that were linked together. In effect, they made an Earth-sized virtual telescope.
Here’s the photo, courtesy of the Event Horizon Telescope.

The photo of Sagittarius A* was the second image of a black hole snapped by the Event Horizon Telescope. The first image dropped in 2019, showing the black hole at the center of the Messier 87 galaxy, aka M87.
