The 2019 Jakarta EE Developer Survey is out and loud and brings crucial insights by around 1,800 respondents into the future of Jakarta EE.
With a quick first look, one thing becomes evident – cloud native is the number one priority for the developer community.
Let’s have a look at the most interesting highlights.
Language usage
To start things off, let’s take a look at the most used languages among the Jakarta EE community.
Unsurprisingly, Java is by far the most used programming language.
What’s interesting to see, however, is that what JavaScript slightly lost in popularity, Python gained in momentum, compared to the results of the 2018 survey.
When it comes to the most used Java versions, Java 8 remains on top.
Nonetheless, it is important to note that Java 11 is slowly leaping forward.

Top priorities
As mentioned earlier. the survey shows that cloud native has become crucially important with the vast majority of the respondents either currently building cloud native architectures or planning to build in the near future.
It’s also no surprise that microservices is the leading architecture for implementing Java in the cloud with 43% while monoliths account for just 13% of the responses.
Putting the microscope on the specific priorities of the Jakarta EE community, better support for microservices and native integration with Kubernetes seems to be of high importance. Production quality reference implementation is also in the community’s top three priorities.
Last but not least we take a look at the most popular cloud native technologies, according to the survey, and we see Docker still in the first place, closely followed by Kubernetes.
