Dystopian Books Have Taken Over the Bestseller Lists…That Can’t Be a Good Sign

There are two stories in the world of bestsellers this week. One is, of course, Onyx Storm‘s dominance. Not only is it the #1 bestselling novel on every list, on many, it also is in the #2 position: one for the special edition, one for the regular printing. It’s the Fastest-Selling Adult Title of the Last Two Decades, selling more than a million hardcovers in the first week alone. Books one and two in the series are also all in the top 10.

The other thing to note on the bestseller lists you can’t actually see in this round-up, but it’s definitely worth noting: the rise in sales of classic dystopian novels. Looking at the full bestseller lists, not just the top 10, we see Parable of the Sower on four bestseller lists, Fahrenheit 451 and The Handmaid’s Tale on three, and 1984 on two. I’m no political scientist…but that can’t be a good sign.

This list continues to have a lack of diversity on many levels, including being disproportionately by white authors. Some Indie Bestsellers you should know about are We Do Not Part by Han Kang and The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer.

To get these numbers, we look at the USA Today overall top 10; Publishers Weekly overall top 10; The New York Times top 10, both Combined Print & E-Book Fiction and Combined Print & E-Book Nonfiction lists; Amazon Charts top 10, both Fiction and Nonfiction; and Indie Bestsellers top 10, Fiction and Nonfiction, both Paperback and Hardcover. New additions to the list this week are bolded.
