Here are 26 publications on religion and spirituality that pay freelance writers.
1. First Things
Published by the Institute on Religion and Public Life, First Things is a conservative and heady publication which offers predominantly Christian and Jewish perspectives. It accepts opinion pieces, featured articles and book reviews in print and online.
Pay: According to the submission guidelines, it offers an honorarium for writers, though the amount is not specified.
2. The Forward
The Forward offers political and cultural coverage for topics relevant to the American Jewish community.
Pay: While The Forward hasn’t confirmed its rates, it states that compensation “will be highly competitive for the right pitch.”
3. America
This is a Jesuit-run publication with a Roman Catholic audience. It publishes reported pieces, personal essays and poetry on politics, faith, arts and culture with a religious or moral angle.
Pay: While the exact rate is unpublished, per Writer’s Market, it pays competitive rates.
4. Tricycle
Tricycle is an impressive quarterly magazine which explores various types of Buddhist ideas. It also pays for quality online content.
Pay: Tricycle told The Write Life that its rates on Writers Weekly ($350 for columns, $0.30/word for features, and $400 for reviews) are “generally accurate, though payment varies somewhat depending on a range of factors.”
5. Guideposts
Guideposts is most known for its inspirational personal stories of how individuals “overcame obstacles, rose above failures, handled sorrow, gained new spiritual insight, and became more effective people through faith in God.” The monthly magazine also offers lifestyle posts, on anything from recipes to parenting tips.
Pay: While Guideposts hasn’t confirmed how much it pays, it does say on its website that it pays for “full-length stories” (which it defines as 1,500 words).
6. Relevant Magazine
A bimonthly lifestyle magazine for Christians in their 20s and 30s. Relevant calls itself progressive, but it’s still theologically conservative and targets an evangelical audience.
Pay: While Relevant does not pay for web articles, it does for pieces in the print magazine.
7. U.S. Catholic
U.S. Catholic is a monthly magazine for an American Catholic audience which focuses on social justice and pop culture.
Pay: The publication offers “financial compensation for both commissioned and on spec content.”
8. The War Cry
Published by the Salvation Army, The War Cry provides inspirational posts that fit within the mission of the nonprofit.
Pay: The War Cry pays 35 cents per word for new articles and 15 cents for reprints.
9. Woman Alive
Woman Alive is a UK-based Christian lifestyle magazine for women.
Pay: Its contributor guidelines lists current standard rates start at £70 (approximately $86) for a one-page article (750-900 words), £95 ($117) for two pages (1200-1300 words) and £125 ($154) for three-page articles (1500-1600 words).

For Her is a lifestyle site for Christian women.
Pay: An editor told The Write Life that while the magazine does pay all contributors, it pays depending on factors including “what degrees they hold, whether they’re specialists on the matter or not, if they provide their own photos or not, and so forth.”
16. Christianity Today
An evangelical magazine published 10 times per year with robust online content, Christianity Today is probably the mostly widely read evangelical Christian publication.
Pay: Who Pays Writers has reports of writers being paid between two and 17 cents per word.

Run by the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics at Washington University in St. Louis, this website offers political opinions from multiple faith traditions.
Pay: One writer reports earning 26 cents per word.

23. Purpose

Light and Life is a monthly theme-based publication from the Free Methodist Church–USA.
Pay: According to Light and Life Magazine’s writer guidelines, whilte rates “differ depending on the article,” it pays $100 for a feature and $50 for “action and discipleship articles.” It “may not” offer compensation for other kinds of articles.
26. Busted Halo
Busted Halo is a Catholic-based publication that aims to “help people understand the Catholic faith, put it into practice in their everyday lives and share it with others.” Pitches are preferred, but they do accept unpublished submissions.
Pay: Busted Halo told The Write Life that it pays $75 per article at typically 500-600 words per article.
