Freelancers need to constantly keep track of the trends in the job market to make sure they have what it takes to succeed!
The newest quarterly index of Upwork takes the pulse of the freelance market and presents the top 20 fastest-growing skills for freelancers for the first quarter of 2019.
One of the most interesting highlights of this quarter’s index is that 75% of the top 20 fastest-growing skills were new to the index.
Let’s have a quick look.
Top 20 fastest-growing skills for Q1 2019
With a first glance, we see Hadoop still very much relevant in the freelance job market. Hadoop is the open source foundation for many modern big data applications. While it has declined in use as other technologies have come into play, Hadoop still packs a punch. Since the previous update of the Upwork index, a number of enterprises have publicly invested in Hadoop, including Databrick and Confluent.
As mentioned earlier, 75% of the top 20 fastest-growing skills were new to the index in Q1 2019, including one of the most exploding technologies, Kubernetes which climbs all the way to 12th place. And that hardly qualifies as a surprise. Jean-Francois Joly, mentioned in an interview with JAXenter:
We’ve noticed a massive adoption of Kubernetes by our customers and expect that it becomes a standard for containerized workload versus more proprietary solutions such as ECS. Many containers are still running outside of Kubernetes and we expect that these workloads move to Kubernetes overtime… as Kubernetes becomes the standard, we will continue to see an expansion of the ecosystem built on it, such as Istio, Knative, and also open standards such as open metrics and open tracing.

Another trend that we see highlighted in the Upwork index is the rise of Julia! The Julia language has been in everyone’s mouth over the past year and numerous reports have been showcasing its growth. Most notably, RedMonk’s report for the first quarter of 2019 offers a very interesting interpretation of this growth:
While there is no technical basis for comparison, it is worth noting that three years ago in our Q1 rankings TypeScript made a similar modest jump from #33 to #31. That is not to say that Julia is destined to follow in TypeScript’s footprints, of course, but rather to serve as a reminder that while it’s uncommon languages can transition quickly from periods of slow, barely measurable growth to high, sustained growth quarter after quarter.
