A new Apple TV 4K? So soon!?

Alongside its big iPad announcement on Tuesday, Apple also revealed a brand-new, updated Apple TV 4K device. This marks the first time the company has released a new version of its set-top box device in the year following its last Apple TV release.

The new Apple TV 4K is powered by the A15 bionic chip, the same powerful chipset that can be found in Apple’s iPhone 14 line. This is a huge jump from the previous Apple TV 4K model, which came out in 2021 but featured the A12 chipset which was first introduced in Apple devices in 2018.

According to Apple, this makes the new third-generation of Apple TV 4K devices up to 50 percent faster than the previous model. It also delivers up to a 30 percent faster GPU performance as well. In addition, the new Apple TV 4K brings HDR10+ to the device for even better quality visuals.

The new Apple TV 4k comes in two options, starting with a 64GB model. This means Apple has done away with the 32GB option, which was the former base model of its Apple TV line. There’s also a new 128GB model which adds Ethernet capabilities along with the WiFi connection found in the base model. This will allow that higher-end Apple TV 4K to connect with smart home devices on local mesh networks.

The 64GB WiFi Apple TV 4K model starts at $129, making it the lowest priced Apple TV 4K device yet. Both models come with a brand-new Siri Remote that adds USB-C charging.

While the Apple TV is a popular streaming device for consumers looking to watch streaming networks like Netflix and HBO MAX, it’s always been considered somewhat of a “hobby” for Apple. With a new model that matches the power and freshness of its other recently launched lines — and a much lower introductory price-point — perhaps Apple is taking a look at centering its Apple TV 4K device. (Also, is the USB-C charging port on the Siri Remote a sign of things to come for Apple’s other devices, like the iPhone?)

The new third-generation Apple TV 4K will be available in-stores starting Nov. 4, but you can pre-order it at the Apple Store starting today.
