“The fact that you can run blockchain autonomously is a game-changer”

The Blockchain Technology Conference has come to an end but now’s the perfect time for an overview of the most important takeaways.

We’ve gathered enough intel to keep our minds well-fed until the next blockchain-related conference and for those of you who couldn’t attend the conference, we livestreamed three keynotes so that you don’t miss out on anything. You can find them here and here.

Speaking of takeaways, we talked to Vinita Rathi, CEO & Founder of Systango and speaker at the Blockchain Technology Conference, about the shortcomings of current blockchain infrastructures, the dos and don’ts of creating an enterprise blockchain solution and more.

Here are some quotes from the interview:

  • The fact that you can run blockchain autonomously is a game-changer.
  • Because there are so many blockchain solutions out there, it’s important to identify the problem you’re trying to solve and if the solution you have chosen can facilitate that. If you make the right choices, blockchain is going to help you, otherwise, like any technology, it’s going to be a nightmare for you to manage.
  • The question you need to ask yourself is: Does this really require blockchain? Then write down why you’re using blockchain for, what are you expecting blockchain to do for you, then you look at existing blockchain providers (both public and private).
  • For smart contracts, Ethereum is the most mature and common solution, plus it has a good community around it. Despite the gas cost, you would still stick to Ethereum just because it’s the fastest-evolving technology.
  • If you are in a business context and are using blockchain for immutability, you have to look at reliability, scalability, and resilience. That’s where Hyperledger will be powerful.
  • The reality is that because the technology is new, there will be times when you will be stuck. Before you decide which blockchain solution you want to use, you need to ask yourself: if I get stuck, who is going to come and help me out? This is [again] where Hyperledger has been very handy just because of the support out there.
  • The list of shortcomings of current blockchain infrastructures includes: no enough documentation, lack of community, lack of clarity on regulations.
  • I don’t know if we’ll have Ethereum as we know it now in five years’ time or another version of Ethereum that’s going to be better than the version we have now but as a technology and platform, it is one of the most innovative frameworks. So it’s definitely going to stay.
